Venice was built on a collection of 118 small islands that, today, are connected by many bridges spanning the web of canals throughout the city. Escaping from barbarians raiding Northern Italy around 402 CE, the founders drove millions of sharpened wooden alder poles into the seabed and topped them with oak planks and slabs of marble or limestone. Because the wooden poles stayed underwater, they petrified. Most are still in place today, but the weight of the buildings has driven the poles deeper into the seabed!
